Observations

- The family seems so detached from each other. It doesn't seem like there is any unity that usually exists in a family

- Something is missing from the book because it is being told from the boys' point of view, but I can't really explain it.

- Mr. and Mrs. Lisbon do not seem to be aware of the state of mind of their daughters

  1. I picked up on the same themes Aashish found. For instance, I found it interesting how people at Cecilia's funeral were criticizing the Lisbons for not bawling. People grieve differently, although I found that part interesting...
In addition, I agree with Aashish that we, as readers, are not getting the complete story. The boys aren't reliable narrators because they don't really know what is actually going on in the Lisbon household.

  2. Aashish hit the nail on the head! I also loved how he said "I don't know what it is, but something is missing." YES. What is the human reaction to this feeling of not being able to identify what should be answerable or explainable?
